Liverpool v Barcelona: Match Preview

Jurgen Klopp’s men have it all to do in their Champions League semi-final second leg clash with Barcelona after suffering a 3-0 defeat away at the Nou Camp.
The Reds’ hopes of qualifying for a second straight Champions League final are hanging by a thread after a Lionel Messi second-half masterclass inspired Barcelona to victory.
Liverpool will feel hard done by having missed a series of gilt-edged opportunities on the night – with Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and James Milner all squandering chances to score.
Klopp insisted he remained proud of his players for what he said was Liverpool’s best away performance for two seasons. The German admitted he “didn’t know if they could play much better.”
Instead he chose to hail Messi describing the Barcelona star as “unstoppable” in the big moments and said his brilliance is so regular it no longer comes as a surprise.
Ultimately Liverpool were made to pay for their profligacy as Luis Suarez returned to haunt his old club with a first-half opener before Messi’s brace put the tie firmly in Barcelona’s grasp.
The Argentine’s first was a reaction to a rebound from close range after Suarez’s shot. His second was a stunning free-kick from 35 yards out that soared into the top corner.
It was another match-winning performance from the magisterial Messi yet Liverpool will be encouraged by how they kept him largely quiet in the first half.
A combination of Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip marshalled Messi effectively during the opening period and the forward cut a frustrated figure as he went off the pitch at the interval.
They’ll need to repeat that trick while also denying Barcelona’s other forwards if they are to have any chance of progressing on Tuesday evening. Concede and Liverpool would need at least five goals to progress due to the away goals rule.
Encouragingly, it’s been 367 minutes since they conceded a home Champions League goal and they are currently on a run of 19 matches unbeaten at Anfield in all competitions.
Liverpool are also a team well-versed in great European comebacks – none more dramatic than the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul where they recovered from three goals down to beat AC Milan on penalties.
Klopp will be hoping to channel the spirit of Istanbul and can count on Anfield to conjure up a special atmosphere as it does so often on big European nights.
If Liverpool’s forwards have rediscovered their shooting boots then an early goal would ramp up the atmosphere even further.
And after missing so many chances in Spain, it seems unlikely Firmino, Salah, Mane and co will be as wasteful again come Tuesday evening having netted 55 times between them already this campaign.
There is precedent. Liverpool are bidding to become only the third team in history of the European Cup/Champions League to come from three goals down after the first leg of a semi and progress to the final – after Panathinaikos in 1971 and Barcelona in 1986.
And they don’t have to look too far back for an example of the Catalans crumbling.
Barcelona sacrificed a 3-0 first leg lead in last season’s quarter-final against Roma by losing 4-1 and crashing out on away goals in the Italian capital.
It looks like a mammoth task for the Reds in what promises to be another scintillating night of Champions League semi-final action live on BT Sport.

Liverpool v Barcelona: Key Stats

- On only three previous occasions has a team been eliminated from a Champions League knockout tie having won the first leg by three or more goals, with the last occasion being Barcelona against Roma in last season’s quarter-final (4-1 first leg, 0-3 second leg).
- Barcelona have won both of their previous Champions League visits to Anfield against Liverpool, winning 3-1 in November 2001 and 1-0 in March 2007; Barcelona are the only the away side to win more than once at Anfield in the Champions League.
- In all European competition, Liverpool have only lost one of their 18 home semi-finals at Anfield (W14 D3 L1), losing 0-1 to a Billy Bremner goal against Leeds United in the 1970-71 Fairs Cup.
- Barcelona have won two away Champions League games in England this season, winning 4-2 at Spurs and 1-0 at Manchester United – no side has ever won three away games in England in a major European competition in a single season.
- Liverpool are unbeaten in 19 home matches in all competitions (W16 D3 L0), only enjoying a longer run once under Jürgen Klopp - a run of 25 between January 2016 and January 2017.
- In the first leg, Liverpool became the 32nd different Champions League opponent Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has scored against – only former Real Madrid and Schalke striker Raúl has scored against more (33).
- Liverpool haven’t conceded a Champions League goal at Anfield in 367 minutes, since Kylian Mbappé scored for Paris Saint-Germain in September; the Reds haven’t kept five consecutive home clean sheets in the European Cup/Champions League since October 1984.
- Barcelona have won just five of their last 18 away Champions League knockout ties (W5 D4 L9), but four of those five victories have come in England (two vs Man City, one vs Arsenal and Man Utd), with the other against PSG in April 2015.
- Lionel Messi has 12 Champions League goals for Barcelona this season, just two shy of his best ever tally in a single season, scoring 14 in 2011-12; the Argentinian has netted more goals against English teams than any other player in the competition’s history (26), including six this season.
